2011 Match Reports and Press Releases

March 14th

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO got their 46th season up and running when two of their riders took part in the Malcolm Flood Memorial Trophy at Eaton Park. Both Olly Buxton and Calvin Grimes gave good accounts of themselves, scoring 10 points each with Buxton looking much improved on last season.

Both will be in action for the Hawks this Sunday as their South-East League campaign opens at the Memorial Playing Field. Kesgrave are the visitors in Division Two and the Youth Division and racing gets under way at 14.00.

March 21st

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO opened their 2011 League season with the B team and the U16 team both in action at home to Kesgrave. The Division 2 match was an exciting and entertaining affair which ended in a last heat decider. Ben Collins shepherded Carly Grimes home for a 7-3 in the first heat but clever Kegrave tactics got them in front in heat 5 and they always just did enough to keep in front as Hethersett made a few errors and Tiff Collins was unlucky to fall twice, injuring an elbow. Nine points down with three races to go the Hawks staged a late rally with a Dave Chambers / Ben Collins 7-3 followed by a 6-4 to leave them needing a 7-3 in the final race.  Collins pulled off a superb pass on unbeaten Gary Brown but Harley Hamill, back in action after a year's absence, was unable to follow so Kesgrave won by the narrowest of margins. Emma Betts made a promising debut.

The Hawks are back in the Youth League after dropping out last year but fielded a very inexperienced side and were well beaten. Olly Buxton led the side strongly and recorded three wins while Melissa Carter was unlucky to fall twice when in good positions. The spirit of the team augurs well for the future.

This Saturday several Hawks are in action in the Celtic Cup between Scotland Select and Ireland Select at Harford Park while on Sunday Club members will be competing in the South-East Grand Prix at Gt.Blakenham.

March 28th

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO had nine riders at the first South-East Grand Prix of the season at Great Blakenham.  Their best successes came in the Senior event which was won by Dave Martin with Calvin Grimes second.  Carly Grimes took 5th place, beating Tiff Collins in the B Final.  Tiff had previously fallen while leading a heat.

Tyler Matthews looked impressive in the Under-8s and finished 7th while sister Jasmin was unlucky to clip the kerb in her u12s C final which cost her a place. Melissa Carter's first visit to a Suffolk track saw her finish 5th in the U16s.  Dave Chambers won a heat in style but did not make the Vets A Final. He finished second in the B Final, one place ahead of Mel Perkins.

Dave Martin and Ben Collins were instrumental in Ireland's 90-84 win over Scotland in the Celtic Cup at Harford Park. Martin scored 13 and featured in some good teamwork while Collins scored 10.  In a special challenge match Ireland Select (with Phil Adams scoring 15) defeated Scotland Select 99-80. Turning out for the Scotland side were Olly Buxton (11 points) and Calvin Grimes (7).

This Sunday the Hawks start their South-East Division 1 campaign against Ipswich at the Memorial Playing Field (2 p.m.) followed by a Division 2 match.

April 4th

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO had a tough start to their South-East Division 1 campaign with the visit of Premier League new boys Ipswich.  With the Hawks having lost key riders from 2010 it is going to be a re-build season and the team performed well enough in several heats to keep the score respectable.  They had no answer to Dan Pike and Leon Yelland but excellent teamwork by both pairings of Dave Martin / Olly Buxton and Ben Coillins / Harley Hamill showed promise for the future.  Collins and Phil Adams both won a race, the latter in a 7-2 victory in heat 16 with Hamill. Dave Chambers had a couple of good rides in his last team match before competing in the World Vets Championship in the USA.

The B team faced reigning champions Ipswich and, with an under-strength side also suffering from two hand injuries, they met the same fate as the first team. Collins and Scott Grimes led the team strongly winning five races between them but Ipswich had strength in depth.

April 11th

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO finished second in the new 12+ Division of the Wosskow Brown British Youth & Junior League at the first Regional Round at Harford Park in Norwich.  Their eight riders amassed 66 points and Tiffany Collins went on to win the Girls Grand Prix Final as well.  There were runner-up positions for Scott Grimes (U16s), Calvin Grimes (U18s) and Carly Grimes (Girls).  James Skipper made an impressive debut.

Olly Buxton reached the A Final in the U16s and  finished 4th. Other placings - U8s - Tyler Matthews 8th, U13s - Jasmin Matthews 14th, U16s - Melissa Carter 6th, Senior - Carly Grimes 6th, Vets - Tim Grimes 5th, Mel Perkins 6th.

This Sunday the Hawks A and U16 teams are at Ipswich.

April 18th

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO faced a tough match at Ipswich with key riders unavailable and were well beaten in South-East Division 1. They were 29 points down after just eight heats with Ben Collins and Phil Adams both having falls. Skipper Dave Martin won heat 9 and the team rallied after the interval having two heat wins. Emma Betts made her first-team debut but Ipswich had five riders unbeaten.

Things were much worse for the South-East Youth League match. Arriving to face the reigning champions with just two riders was very daunting.  Ipswich kindly loaned two riders to make a competitive match but the official score will read 102-33.  Scott Grimes salvaged the team's pride though dropping just two points.

May 9th

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO secured their first South-East Division 1 win of the season with a superb all-round team effort against East London.  The signs were promising when Great Blakenham were the visitors recently - in that match the Hawks trailed by just one point after six heats before greater experience prevailed. Against East London they got some early breaks and capitalised with the three heat leaders being confident to take on the opposition while inexperienced Calvin Grimes and Oliver Buxton came up trumps when required to steer the team home.

Three Hawks have gone international. Dave Chambers flew the Hethersett flag at the World Championships in Edenton USA where he finished 9th in the World Vets Championship with 12 points, Tim Grimes scored 9 points in the Eurovets round at Harford Park and this Saturday Dave Martin will be racing for the Ireland team in the Home International at Wednesfield.

May 16th

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO had three key riders missing from last weekend's victorious side when League leaders Norwich came to visit on Wednesday. The end result did not do justice to the effort the Hawks put in, especially the Scott Grimes / Oliver Buxton pairing, but mainly the home side were too slow off the starts to trouble Norwich.

Phil Adams led the attack well and Dave Chambers had a  couple of good team-riding heats as captain, especially keeping his high-flying son Dan, who moved to Norwich in the winter, at the back.

May 23rd

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO successfully staged the third Regional Round of the Wosskow Brown British Youth & Junior League. 58 youngsters came from all over the Eastern Region and Hethersett riders featured well. The 12+ Division saw the Hawks maintain their second place with their six riders amassing 54 points. Oliver Buxton overcame a disappointing opening ride to finish third in the U16 Final while Calvin Grimes (U18s) and Tiffany Collins (Girls) finished second. Tom Brown made his team debut.  In the Under-12 Division Hethersett's three riders - Tyler and Jasmin Matthews and Daniel Martin - all rode exceptionally well.

Activities at the Hethersett track will be suspended for a few weeks while a safety fence is erected but this Sunday Ben Collins is in Poole for the Laurels and on Monday sister Tiffany is in the Ladies and Girls Academy at Swindon.

May 30th

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO staged the Norfolk U19 Championship at the Memorial Playing Field and the event was won by former Hethersett rider Dan Chambers.  The best home riders were Philip Adams, who failed to capitalise on a favourable draw, and speedy 15-year-old Scott Grimes. Both tied on 17 points, three behind the winner and two behind runner-up Josh Colby.  Scott drew the inside starting position for the race-off for third place on the podium and held off the challenge of Phil to take the chequered flag.  Ben Collins fell in his last race while chasing Dan and lost his chance of a trophy while Oliver Buxton also impressed.

Ben travelled to Poole to race in the Junior Laurels, a major invitation event, where he scored 10 points.  Tiffany Collins had an excellent day finishing second in the Girls Laurels event.

This Saturday the Hawks' Veterans team are in Leicester for the British Club Championship and on Sunday several Hethersett riders will be at Ipswich for a South-East Grand Prix while Tiffany Collins is in Newport for the Welsh Girls Open event.

June 5th

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO gave a good performance in the very competitive British Veterans Club Championship held at Leicester.  They finished fourth in their semi-final but were only seven points away from qualifying for the final.  Their progress was hampered by injuries - Tim Grimes slipped off in his second ride and had to face his last two rides with a strained groin and then Roger Carter crashed heavily (a fall that saw a Birmingham rider excluded) and ended the match with a badly swollen knee.  Dave Chambers got the biggest cheer when he stormed away to win the final heat.

Meanwhile Tiffany Collins was contesting the Welsh Open Ladies Championship at Newport.  She dropped just one point in qualifying races and then negotiated the semi-finals to reach the final.  From the unluckiest drawn gate position - the outside -  she did well to work her way through to third place behind Sandra Tamborska (Sheffield) and Charlie-Jane Herbert (Horspath).

Tiffany was among nine Hawks who competed in Sunday's South East Grand Prix at Ipswich.  Best for the Hawks was Dave Martin who now leads the Senior series after a second place at Ipswich. Phil Adams (Senior) and Oliver Buxton (U16s) both finished third and Tyler Matthews (U8s) came fourth.

This Sunday Hethersett travel to the Midlands to take on holders Leicester in the first round of the British Team Championship while on Wednesday (15th) the Carmichaels Norfolk U16 Championship is being held at Eaton Park.

June 20th

HETHERSETT HAWKS/ SWINTON & CO will be celebrating their 45th anniversary at the Memorial Playing Field on Saturday.  Starting at 1 p.m with the Breckland Autos Hethersett Charity Cup, the main event will follow at 3 p.m. when several ex-members will return to the track and compete for the Ian Hulcoop Memorial Trophy.  The present day Hawks have a new Norfolk Champion - Scott Grimes captured the Carmichaels Under-16 title at Eaton Park with a faultless maximum.

The Hawks travelled to East London for South-East League matches and competed well to only trail by 10 points at the interval. Towards the end they faded to lose by 26 but there were three fine wins by Phil Adams, two from Dave Martin and a very improved performance by Scott Grimes.

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO celebrated their 45th anniversary with special events at the Memorial Playing Field.  The Hethersett Charity Cup, sponsored by Breckland Autos, was won by former member Dan Chambers (Norwich) on 19 points. Runner-up was Ipswich's Leon Mower on 18 and Jason Barker (Norwich) defeated home skipper Dave Martin in a race-off for third after both finished on 17 points. Other scorers were (Hethersett unless stated) - P.Adams 15 S.Grimes 15 G.Brown (Kesgrave) 15 A.Hill (Ipswich) 14 J.Stant (Ipswich) 11 B.Collins 11 O.Buxton 10 Dave Chambers 9 T.Collins 8 A.Johnson 8 R.Carter 7 M.Perkins 5.

The main event, an Anniversary Fours for the Ian Hulcoop Memorial Trophy, was preceded by a minute's silence in memory of former member Trevor Bunn who died in a road accident two weeks previously.  Several former riders returned to the track and many others returned to witness some entertaining racing. Team D, which included two of the Club's former British junior champions,  won with ease as Nick Myhill and Nick Bedson were in brilliant form supported by the ever robust Mike Kiddell and Nick Bray, who looked classy despite two falls. All present seemed to enjoy their forays and vowed to be back in five years for the Golden Jubilee!  Scores-

The following day the Hawks were at Great Blakenham in South East Division 1 and could have done with some of their former stars as they again suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of a side containing four Premier League riders who were all untouchable. The midweek South-East Youth League match was much closer and the Hawks top U16 riders put up a very stiff challenge to Norwich who were just too strong in depth.  The Hawks gave a debut to Richard Wiltshire and welcomed back Katie Adams after a long absence through illness.  Scott Grimes was outstanding dropping his only points in a very competitive final heat while Olly Buxton showed a lot of determination to win five of his six races.  Axl Johnson also showed much promise, another rider making a comeback.

This Saturday the Hawks are at East Park in Wolverhampton for the British U19 Club Championship while on Sunday some Hawks will be at East London for a Grand Prix.

July 3rd

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO travelled to Wolverhampton's East Park to contest the British U19 Club Championship with twelve other Clubs. Drawn in a first semi-final with four others, they settled well to a track much bigger than their own and one that none of them had visited before.  Securing a run of second and third places they were still in contention but Ben Collins hit the outside kerb after a collision and fell off. At the halfway stage the Hawks were still in third place but a rousing race win by 15-year-old Scott Grimes in heat 12 lifted the spirits. Phil Adams was flying on the open spaces and he also got a race win in heat 15 before a fantastic ride in the penultimate heat which saw him go flying past Welsh International Dan Bock on the outside before crashing to the floor and getting excluded for causing a race to be stopped. That was so unlucky but up popped substitute Tiff Collins to get a vital third place inn the final heat to secure third place in the match. Despite being eliminated it was a terrific performance by the Hawks.

July 10th

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO recorded their second South-East League Division 1 win of the season with a thrilling last ditch victory over East London at the Memorial Playing Field. Hethersett started well with an early 7-3 victory by Oliver Buxton and Dave Martin. The Londoners clawed the deficit back two heats later and then went ahead. A good ride by Axl Johnson in the race before the interval brought the scores level. The teams were still level with three heats remaining and Phil Adams completed his fourth victory in heat 16. A forceful ride by Ben Collins in the penultimate heat gave the opportunity for Buxton to get through and win and it looked like a 7-3 was certain until the last corner. A superb late pass saw East London retain hope trailing by two going into the last race.  It fell on the experienced shoulders of skipper Martin to speed away from the tapes to win the race and the match for Hethersett.

In the Norfolk Grand Prix match at Hethersett there were wins for Tyler Matthews (U10) Scott Grimes (U16) and David Martin (Senior). Jasmin Matthews(U13) Oliver Buxton (U16) Phil Adams (Senior) and Carly Grimes (Girls) all reached A Finals.

This Saturday a few Hethersett riders will be contesting British Youth & Junior League Grand Prix in Oxford and Swindon.

July 17th

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO had three members racing in the Grand Prix series of the Wosskow Brown British Youth & Junior League. The older age groups were held at Swindon where the track was sticky and bumpy after heavy rain.  Olly Buxton got two second places in his U16 heats. His total of nine points was enough to make the D Final which he led in the early stages but, after being passed, protected his second place well.

Tiffany Collins was racing in the very competitive girls category - 19 girls providing some great racing with the track drying out. She achieved two wins and two seconds in the heats to score 14 points and gain a place in the A Final.  This was rerun after a rider was excluded bringing down two riders, including Tiffany.  At the second attempt Tiffany was beaten from the start but quickly made a pass to hit the front and race away to win the girls event for the day and give herself a great chance of retaining her title with three rounds to go.

Over at Horspath near Oxford the drainage worked well and the track was good for Jasmin Matthews to have her first test on the national stage in the u12s.  Three tough rides amassed only four points from a lot of effort but in her final race she sped away from her three girl opponents and kept her nerve to reach the chequered flag first.  A total of eight points was a fair reward but insufficient to make the finals with only half the 31 riders getting through.

Jasmin's brother Tyler was in outstanding form in the Norfolk U10 Championships at Harford Park.  The 8-year-old showed brilliant tactical skill to come from last to first in one race and his 15 points gave him runners-up position on the podium.  Ayrin Larter raced in her first competitive match and showed tremendous determination. 13 points took her into a race-off for third place. She fell heavily trying too hard to make an impossible pass but picked herself up for the rerun.  The fall had taken its toll and she had to be content with fourth place overall - not a bad start to a career.

This Saturday the Club has riders in the British U19 Championships and Women's League event at Ipswich and the Club's U10 an U14 teams are back there on Sunday.

July 24th

HETHERSETT HAWKS /  SWINTON & CO visited Harford Park to take on local rivals and League leaders Norwich in South East League Division 1.  Both teams were near full strength but the Hawks had a couple of riders lacking recent match acion and this showed in the first half. Norwich built up a 17-point lead by the interval and skipper Dave Martin had to rally the troops.  A tactical change had the desired effect and some spirited riding left him singing their praises at the end with the second half only going to Norwich by two points. In fact Hethersett only lost two races in the second period, and in one of those Martin fell off. Phil Adams had some notable scalps in his two heat wins and Scott Grimes was worth more than he scored as he almost pulled off some great passing movements.

Adams was also in good form at the British U19 Championships held in Ipswich. He finished joint 5th despite a total of just 12 points, reflecting how close the field was matched apart from the top three. Ben Collins finished joint 7th on 11 points after a lengthy process to qualify for the final.

At the same venue Carly Grimes and Tiffany Collins scored 13 points each in the Eastern Region team's 75-45 win over the North in the British Women's League.  Collins was still suffering from a wrist injury sustained at Swndon the previous week and only made the B Final in the Over-16 Grand Prix.  She won that final but Grimes did well to make the A Final and finished fourth.

The Hawks finally made an appearance in the South-East U10 and U14 Leagues having pulled out of the first matches.  They gave debuts to four new recruits at Ipswich so they did not threaten the top Suffolk sides but there were good performances, especially from Katie Adams and Luca Pinheiro.

The Club held a special reception at the Hethersett Social Club to celebrate the upgrade of their track by British Cycling to National standard. This follows the erection of a safety fence by members, described by the National body as "probably the best in the country" after their inspection. A special presentation was made to Tim Grimes who master-minded the whole project which was grant-aided by Hethersett Parish Council.

This Sunday Hethersett entertain Ipswich in League matches starting at 2 p.m. at the Memorial Playing Field.

July 31st

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO entertained Ipswich in the South-East League and, with the visitors' team full of Premier League riders, it was always going to be a tough match. And so it proved as Ipswich racked up five maximum heat wins in the first nine races to lead 55-34 at the interval. Phil Adams, who shed a chain while leading his race, was in brilliant form and won all his other four races and he inspired the team to put up a much better second-half performance. Scott Grimes, promoted to a heat-leader battled hard against much more experienced opponents.

On Saturday Hethersett will be represented in the Eastern team for the Women's League match at Leicester and on Sunday some members will be in the South East Grand Prix at Somersham.

August 7th

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO had Tiffany Collins racing for the East Region in the British Women's League match against South & South Wales held at Leicester.  With her partner Danielle Riley from Norwich she secured four 7-3 wins for the Region which was a key factor in an eventual narrow win - a win which puts the East in the final later this year.  Tiffany had a heavy fall in her last race which gave her an aggravated wrist injury as well as whiplash stiffness in the neck.  She had to pull out of the individual grand prix races but is determined to be back racing next weekend at Stockport, where she will continue the defence of her Youth & Junior League Grand Prix title.

Three Hethersett riders were at the dusty and windy track at picturesque Somersham in Suffolk for a South East Grand Prix. Dave Martin increased his lead in the Senior series by winning the final closely followed by teammate Phil Adams.  Mel Perkins finished third in the Vets category.

The midweek Division Two match with Norwich was rained off and will be held under floodlights in October.

As well as riders at Stockport Saturday, the Hawks have two teams in League action at Ipswich on Sunday.

August 14th

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO were well below full strength for their visit to Ipswich who also had riders absent.  A good match transpired but Ipswich's promising young squad came through to win comfortably. Phil Adams was again the top Hawk as he won three of his five races but the highlight was the return of his brother David after a year's break. He had lost none of his tactical awareness and aggressive riding but did lack a bit of fitness.  Likewise Harley Hamill who has had not been available much and picked up two exclusions on the starting grid.  Scott Grimes again showed promise and won heat 8 from the back and this was followed by a rousing 7-3 win by David Adams and Roger Carter.

In the Division 2 match Hethersett had only three other riders available so some tired first-team riders shared the remaining rides and were well beaten by the reigning champions. Scott Grimes won heat 1 and Harley Hamill secured a couple of second places but apart from that it was one way traffic. Still it gave the likes of Emma Betts and Richard Wiltshire so more useful experience.

Tiffany Collins overcame her injury to keep in contention to defend her British Youth & Junior Girls Grand Prix title when she scored 14 points and took second place in the second national round at Stockport. Carly Grimes was impressive after a difficult first race and won the C Final while in the U16 event Oliver Buxton struggled to master the track but made the D Final where he finished fourth.

In the Norfolk Grand Prix at Harford Park Scott Grimes won the U16s with Buxton second and there were also second places for Phil Adams (Senior) and Carly Grimes (Ladies).

This Sunday the Hawks U10 and U14 teams are in action at Great Blakenham while on Saturday Mel Pekins will be racing in the British over-50s and over-60s championships in Edinburgh.

August 22nd

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO have made all their final preparations for what has been billed as "the biggest sporting event ever to be staged in the village".  This coming weekend just under 100 riders from all over the country, including British Champion Mark Boaler, will descend on the Club's Memorial Playing Field track to contest British Championships sponsored by Wilco. Racing starts at 12 noon on both Saturday and Sunday and will conclude early evening.  Saturday's racing sees the Under-10s and Ladies competitions through to the crowning of new British Champions while on Sunday Senior and Under-16 riders battle to reach Monday's prestige finals at Eaton Park.

The events are a culmination of lots of planning and hard work by Club members to get the track up to national standard and to be able to cater for such a big event. Tiffany Collins and Carly Grimes will be hoping home advantage will help them put in bids for the Ladies title while Scott Grimes will relish testing his skills against the best visitors in the U16s on Sunday.

Last weekend Mel Perkins contested both the Over-60s and Over-50s Championships in Edinburgh. He finished 9th in the Over-60s with 12 points but found the pace tough in the younger age group and his 7 points were only enough for 14th place.

At the other end of the spectrum the Hawks' U10 and U14 teams were in action at Gt.Blakenham but, being down in numbers, they trailed in fourth in each match.

Next Wednesday Hethersett riders will be at Eaton Park for a Norfolk Grand Prix at 6.30 and back there again on Thursday (6.45) for a rearranged Division 1 match against Norwich.

August 29th

HETEHRSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO successfully staged major national events at its Memorial Playing Field track, despite having to cope with the vagaries of the English weather.  It was a credit to the track staff that they were able to continually provide a surface that allowed the riders to perform to the highest standard in front of the biggest crows ever seen at the circuit.

In the British Under-10 Championships home riders were knocked out in the Semi-Finals - Daniel Martin scored 11 points, just two short of qualification, and Tyler Matthews scored 8 points. The event was won by Jack Chaplin (Ipswich) with Gemma Hill making a 1-2 for Ipswich by wining the Girls' U10 title.

The British Women's Championship was next on and the Hawks' Tiffany Collins was fancied to do well. Having reached the Final she was lying second in her opening race when she hit the kerb and fell. She never settled back into her rhythm after that and finished with 10 points. Carly Grimes was disappointed to not to make it through the qualifying heats , a fate also experienced by young members Katie Adams and Jasmin Matthews.  The Women's & U16 Girls titles were won by Livvy Horsley from Horspath (Oxford).

Sunday saw the turn of Britain's top Senior and U16 riders and the racing was much more tougher as they scrambled for places in Monday's finals at Eaton Park. Best performance came from Scott Grimes but even he did not make the final itself, losing a race-off for the last place after scoring 12 points - a score that would have been much better had he not slipped off when leading a heat.  Oliver Buxton made a sound debut in the event at nearby Harford Park, scoring 11 and Axl Johnson showed promise with 9 points at Hethersett.

In the Senior event Phil Adams and Dave Martin came through the qualifiers but finished well short of the qualifying mark in the Semi-Finals. Calvin Grimes and Ben Collins just failed to come through the qualifying competition.

It took a tremendous team effort for the small village club to stage such a prestigious event. It is quickly back to basics this weekend with some of the Club's top youngsters in action at Gt.Blakenham and Ipswich on Saturday and the first and second teams at home to Gt.Blakenham on Sunday.

September 5th

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO had a surprise double victory over Suffolk side Gt.Blakenham at the Memorial Playing Field.  Both teams were well down on full strength and the Hawks made early mistakes to give Blakenham the lead by heat 8. Vets Dave Chambers and Roger Carter put the Hawks in front with a 7-3 win in heat 10 and a last bend win by man-of-match Ax; Johnson in heat 12 increased the lead. Olly Buxton and Chambers put together another 7-3 before Phil Adams rode a strong race to defeat British Vets Champion Jason Ashford. Cousins Calvin and Scott Grimes sealed the match with a 7-3 win in heat 17 and it was a true team performance with Richard Wiltshire getting three third places in his first-team debut.

In the Division 2 match it was a similar story as Hethersett used nine riders to Blakenham's six and just rode sensibly to keep increasing their lead.  Johnson and Scott Grimes were unbeaten.

In midweek the Hawks lost at Norwich but gave the League leaders a shock in the early heats. Five 7-3 wins in the space of seven races put the scoreline much more in favour of Norwich but the Hawks staged a late recovery including a 7-3 win by Carter and Calvin Grimes and two fine race wins by Phil Adams.

Tiffany Collins made the best of a good draw to reach the A Final at the Wosskow Brown British Youth & Junior League Grand Prix at Gt.Blakenham despite a heavy cold. Drawn on the outside grid in the final, she fought hard to come through to third place right on the finishing line so keeping alive her chances of a podium place when the series end later this month in the Midlands.  Olly Buxton reached the D Final in the U16s but was excluded for a false start in the key race.  Over at Ipswich Jasmin Matthews tried hard to score 8 points in the U12s, insufficient to reach a final in a big field.

Jasmin's brother Tyler was the rider in form at the Norfolk Grand Prix Round 6 at Eaton Park, coming from the back to win the U10s final.  Scott Grimes won the U16s and is now a clear leader with two rounds to go. In total the Hawks had 14 riders taking part.

This Sunday the Hawks are at East London in Division 1 and on Wednesday (14th) stage the 7th round of the Grand Prix at 7 p.m.

September 12th

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO produced another good team performance to win their second consecutive match in the bottom of the table clash at East London. A 7-3 win by David Adams and Ben Collins in heat one was the best possible start but the home side responded until Collins again engineered a 7-3 with Dave Chambers in heat 5. Just before the interval a home rider fell while leading, gifting the Hawks a 7-3 and a 48-42 interval lead. This was reduced in the next heat but a foul by a home rider in 13 led to an exclusion and a 6-3 win for Hethersett. From that point Hethersett just consolidated their lead to win by seven points. Phil Adams was outstanding with five straight wins but each member of the team made a contribution at a vital stage.

This Sunday the Hawks stage the penultimate round in the South East Grand Prix series with riders of all ages taking part from 1 p.m.  On Saturday Tiffany Collins will be representing the Eastern Region in the Final of the British Women & Girls League in West Yorkshire.

September 19th

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO staged two Grand Prix events at their track in the past week.  On Sunday 52 riders attended from the Eastern Region and there were some good performances from home riders. The club had a 1-2-3 in the Senior event with Phil Adams, David Martin and Harley Hamill leading the Final and there were other Final places too for Tyler Matthews (U8s), Oliver Buxton (U16s) and Mel Perkins (Vets), each finishing third.

In the midweek Norfolk Grand Prix Tyler Matthews won the U10s with Troy Bunn fourth, Jasmin Matthews was second in the U13s, Scott Grimes and Oliver Buxton were the top two in the U16s, Dave Martin was third and Phil Adams fourth in the Seniors and Carly Grimes won the Girls category.

Tiffany Collins played a major role in the Eastern Region's win in the final of the British Women's League at Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire. With her partner Laura Dale from Ipswich they scored 25 points in the five-point victory over the holders from the Midlands.  She then went on to finish third in the individual Grand Prix.

Phil Adams won the Club's U19 title with Scott Grimes and Ben Collins taking the minor places on the podium.  Darcey Street won the "champagne moment" prize.

This Saturday Tiffany Collins and Oliver Buxton will be in Sandwell for the final round of the British Youth & JUnior Grand Prix and on Sunday the Hawks' "B" and U16 teams are at Kesgrave.

September 26th

HETHERSETT HAWKS /SWINTON & CO had two riders at Sandwell for the final National Round of the Wosskow Brown British Youth & Junior League Grand Prix series. Oliver Buxton took one race to familiarise himself with the small, tight track in the U16s category but competed well for nine points qualifying for the C Final. A terrific line on the first corner almost paid off but in the end he had to settle for third place. In the Girls section Tiffany Collins won two heats on her way to 13 points and a place in the A Final. With all four riders looking for an overall podium place the first bend was very competitive and unfortunately Tiffany came down.  The referee saw no infringement so the race continued leaving Tiffany disappointed. However, the finishing order in the race ensured that she still made the podium having enough points to finish third in the eight-round series in what has become a very competitive category.

The Hawks had four of their top riders unavailable against League leaders Norwich so were always going to struggle but a return to full fitness by Harley Hamill and wins by Scott Grimes and Oliver Buxton ensured the match was closer than the final score suggested. It was just that Norwich's top order were far too experienced with four riders unbeaten.

Hethersett only had three riders available for the South-East Youth League match but borrowed three youngsters from the home side to make a competitive match. The scratch side actually won 86-74 but when guest rider points were adjusted Kesgrave were officially declared comfortable winners. Oliver Buxton won five of his six races and the other two Hawks both had their moments, a win in heat 12 for Katie Adams being well deserved.

On Saturday Hethersett will be at Colchester for the South East Ladies and Girls Championships and Cup events and on Sunday riders will be at Harford Park for the final South East Grand Prix.

October 3rd

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO narrowly missed out on honours at the TA Security South East KO Cup Fours event at Colchester.  They started well leading after four heats but in the next four races they lost ground following an exclusion and a last bend fall.  The Essex track is very tricky and the Hawks did well from their four outside grids to still give them a good chance but only Phil Adams was able to add another race win and they finished one point short of runners-up spot.

Dave Martin won the South-East Senior Grand Prix title winning the final round at Harford Park. Phil Adams took third place in the series, the same position as Mel Perkins in the Vets series.

Tyler Matthews (U10s) and Scott Grimes (U16s) picked up winners trophies for the Norfolk Grand Prix series after the final round at Harford Park.  Also getting minor wards were Jasmin Matthews (U13s) Oliver Buxton (U16s) Carly Graime & Emma Betts (Girls) and Phil Adams & Roger Carter (Seniors).

This Saturday several club members will be competing in the East Anglian Championships at Harford Park which start at 11 a.m.

October 10th

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO have had one of their most successful weeks ever. On Saturday at Harford Park, Norwich the Club had three riders crowned East Anglian Champions. In the Under-16s Scott Grimes won an exciting three-rider race-off in which all three led at one time or another.  On the third lap his two rivals clashed and he was able to get away to secure the title. In the combined Senior / Under-19 event Dave Martin produced a determined last bend pass over club mate Harley Hamill to finish second in his opening ride. That was his only defeat as four wins took him to an unassailable 19 points to regain the Senior title he won in 2007. Phil Adams finished on 18 points which gave him the undisputed Under-19 title, the first Hethersett rider to win this event since its inception as Under-18s in 1974.  It also gave him a race-off with Gary Brown from Kesgrave for runner-up in the Senior event, a race he won after Brown fell trying a brave pass round the outside.  There was a podium place also for Oliver Buxton who finished third in the Under-19s after losing a race-off for runner-up. To cap a good day for the Club they provided the top three scorers - Grimes, Buxton and Axl Johnson - in the Norfolk U16 team that lost 103-77 to Suffolk.

Earlier in midweek the Hawks finally achieved a win over Norwich at the eighth attempt in all competitions.  In the best match seen at Hethersett this season, the B team defeated their local rivals by two points. A pass by Axl Johnson in the penultimate heat gave Hethersett the lead and Oliver Buxton and Emma Betts held their nerve in a three times rerun last heat to get the 5-5 required for victory. The match was well refereed by Phil Adams but was dominated by two Hethersett maximums from Scott Grimes and Harley Hamill, the latter celebrating his 18th birthday in style.

This Saturday Harley Hamill and Phil Adams will be representing Ireland against Wales at East Newport and on Sunday Hethersett stage South East Under-10 and Under-14 League matches starting at 2 p.m.

October 17th

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO received more honours with the selection of Phil Adams and Harley Hamill to represent Ireland against Wales at East Newport.  Both took part in the B International with Hamill scoring 10 points after taking time to get used to the small, almost circular, track.  Adams had been before and settled quicker scoring 15 points in a match won by Wales 97-83.  His performance earned him promotion to the full international team for the Celtic Cup match, the final one in a triangular tournament. The Welsh had so much track advantage and romped to a 101-78 win and the overall title - Adams scoring eight points.

In perfect conditions at the Memorial Playing Field some of the best of the region's youngsters produced some excellent fare for a big crowd in the final leg of the South-East U10 and U14 Leagues. Hethersett riders each had some small success in the U10s event with Tyler Matthews well to the fore in all of his races.  In the U14s Katie Adams was impressive but the remainder of the team, including debutant Eloise Baker, tried hard even though a bit out of their depth.

This Sunday the Hawks have their final League action of the season with a trip to Gt.Blakenham for their A and B teams.

October 24th

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO enjoyed unseasonable weather but in all other respects their final League matches of the season at Great Blakenham were typical end of season affairs.  Both Clubs struggled for numbers and the Division 1  match featured 5 v 6 instead of 8 v 8 in a shortened programme.  Hethersett steadily put their extra rider to good advantage and built up a lead while Phil Adams and Harley Hamill both defeated Premier League rider Adam Peck.

so good victories to round off a busy and exciting season - the club brings down the curtain at the Memorial Playing Field this Sunday (2pm) with its own Maiden Plate and Best Pairs events.

October 31st

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO brought the curtain down on their season with the traditional Club events but much of the excitement was about 2012.  Following the successful staging of British Championships this August, the Hawks have been invited by British Cycling to stage a full international test match between Gt.Britain and Poland as part of the European Championships week in the Eastern Region.  The event on Tuesday July 31 will feature Ladies and Junior test matches as well as the full international.

It was Axl Johnson's day in the Club events. He started by winning the Maiden Plate with a maximum with minor places going to Tiffany Collins and Daniel Martin.  Then he teamed up with Scott Grimes to win the Best Pairs.  They defeated their main rivals Harley Hamill & Carly Grimes 6-4 in heat 13 to bring the two pairs level so a race-off was required.  Again it was looking like a 6-4 win before Hamill produced a burst of speed to dive under Scott Grimes. The riders collided but it was Grimes who got away to a 7-3 win.  Only one point behind the two leaders were two other pairs and it needed two race-offs to decide third place overall - Ben Collins and Calvin Grimes taking it from Phil Adams and Tiffany Collins.

Next action for some of the Hawks is the British Indoor Championships at the end of November.

November 28th

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO had their last action of 2011 at the British Indoor Championships near Manchester.  Six riders took part but they all found the going tough.  Best result came from Tiffany Collins who finished 9th in the Women's Championship with 10 points despite suffering two exclusions.  Just one point behind was Carly Grimes.  Scott Grimes struggled in the U16s and scored just five points while his father Tim came 12th in the Vets Over-40s event.  The major Open event saw all of Britain's top riders present and Dave Martin (11 pts) and Ben Collin (10) failed to make it through the Semi-Finals.  Ben also was eliminated in qualifying heats of the U19s.

The club will celebrate a successful season at Hethersett Social Club on December 9th.

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO celebrated a memorable season when over 50 members, families and friends attended the Club's Presentation Party at Hethersett Social Club. All were reminded of the Club's achievements in 2011 - securing grants from South Norfolk Council and Hethersett Parish Council to purchase 12 new club bikes and erect a new safety fence at the Memorial Playing Field track.  The fence and other improvements, all completed by Club members, saw the track awarded National status allowing the Club to successfully stage British Finals in August.

Various recruitment exercises at school fairs and Sport in the Park had helped to swell the attendances at Tuesday Club Nights - 75 attended during the year and over half of them for the first time. It is hoped this success can be built on to encourage more members to support team and individual competitions.

On the racing side the Club celebrated three East Anglian Champions, one Norfolk Champion and three local Grand Prix champions. Two girls were part of the winning Eastern Region team in the British Women & Girls League with Tiffany Collins taking third place in the British U17 Girlls Grand Prix series.

Club awards for the season were dominated by Phil Adams who won Top Scorer, First Team Rider of the Year and the coveted Sportsman of the Year award, voted for by members and supporters on the night.  Other presentations were made to Tyler Matthews (Best Newcomer), Oliver Buxton (Most Improved Junior), Scott Grimes (Second Team Rider of the Year) and special awards as Club Members of the Year to Tim Grimes and Caroline Collins.

The presentations concluded with Peter Steward, Chairman of Hethersett & The Meltons Sports Association, congratulating the Club on its contribution to village sporting life that had seen Hethersett become Norfolk Sports Village of the Year and Winner of Winners. All Club members present were photographed with the awards in recognition.
