An Introduction to the Different Types of Bikes

A bicycle, or bike, in short, is a pedal-driven single-track vehicle that has two wheels. The bicycle was first introduced in Europe in the late 19th-century. From then on, the bicycle has become the most popular mode of transportation of humans.

Before buying your own bike, let us get to know the most common types of bikes with their distinct style and features.

 

Mountain Bike

MTB usually have 26” or 29″ tires which allow riders to trail in loose dirt and over obstacles. MTB can be a hardtail with shocks at the front, full-suspension with shocks at both the front and back and rigid with no shocks at all. Suspensions help cyclists access rocky mountain trails.

Road Bike

Road bikes can easily be identified with their thin tires and dropped handlebars. They are designed for road conditions, equipped with extreme speed and efficiency. There have been various sub-categories of road bikes including sportive bikes, triathlon bikes, and touring bikes, among others.

Hybrid Bike

The hybrid bike is the most best-selling in the UK. Hybrid bikes borrow features from road and mountain bikes. The tire size of hybrid bikes is in between the road and mountain bike tire width. Sometimes, they have suspension forks so they can work well on smooth dirt and paved trails.

BMX

BMX stands for Bicycle Motor Cross. They are single-speed bikes that are popular in motorsports and stunt riding. They are very robust and durable, perfect for various jumps and tricks.

Cyclo-Cross Bike

Cyclo-cross bikes are like road bikes but are capable of racing around dirt trail and obstacles. They were equipped with either disc brakes or cantilever brakes.

Tandem Bike

Tandem bike is a tide built for two. Basically, it is composed of two seats and two pedals which can be run at the same pace. They are perfect for young riders and new cyclists.

Folding Bike

Folding bike can be your perfect travel companion because they can be folded. They can fit easily in your car or on a boat. However, they are not that equipped with other bikes.

Kid’s Bike

A kid’s bike is specially designed for children. It is smaller than an average bike. It has rubber wheels. Sometimes they have balancing wheel, especially for first-timers.
