NEWSLETTER OF HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO CSC

ISSUE NO. 2010/27        DATE  20TH SEP   EDITOR:    mel peRkins

LOTS OF PLUSSES

The Hawks were back in League action after a month’s break and they faced leaders Gt.Blakenham with a weakened team.  We started well and a good 5-5 by Phil Adams and Roger Carter gave encouragement and then Ben Collins was unlucky to get excluded after passing Adam Peck and then clashing with him. Only five down after five heats was good but three quick heat wins stretched Blakenham’s lead and it was then a question of damage limitation.  Phil produced two good wins and Oli Buxton showed some promise. Ben continued to entertain and another couple of passes or attempts gained little reward. But it was still encouraging.

Hethersett 74 Gt.Blakenham 103

P.Adams 14+1 D.Martin 11+2 O,Buxton 10+1 Calvin Grimes 10 R.Carter 9 B.Collins 8 Dave Chambers 6+2 Carly Grimes 6+1

For the Combination match we welcomed back Harley Hamill, gave a team debut to Melissa Carter while Andrew Grimes had his first team appearance for over 20 years. Meanwhile Blakenham had six riders all of whom had raced in the A team so they gave us 42 points start. We did really well and were even up without the handicap at the interval but three 7-3s changed that. We still had a convincing win on the official paper and still have a chance of runners-up with Ipswich at home and East London away to come. Harley looked sharp and Tiffany rode really well apart from one missed pedal after clipping the inside line.

Hethersett B (74+48) 122 Gt.Blakenham B (85+6) 91

H.Hamill 19+2 T.Collins 14 M.Perkins 12+2 Carly Grimes 10+1 A.Grimes 10+1 M.Carter 9

BEN BEST AT GP OF GB

Three Hethersett riders raced in the Semi-Finals of the Grand Prix of Gt.Britain at Eaton Park but neither of them reached the Final.  Best performance came from Ben Collins who won two races and was unlucky not to score a couple more points than the 12 he did. Dave Martin tried hard to compete but was just off the pace with 10 points but David Adams, in as a late replacement, had a match to forget with three falls but a second place in heat 15 restored some pride.

E.ANGLIAN SATURDAY 2ND

On Saturday October 2nd there are five matches being staged at Kesgrave. A separate note is included with this Hawktalk (e-mailed to current members only) and those who have qualified for junior events or those that want to enter the combined U19/Senior event need to be aware that the deadline for all these is next Tuesday September 28th. I will be going all day so can help with transport of four riders plus 7 bikes if need be.

RAIN DISAPPOINTS

Rain caused the postponement of the Club U19s Championship and Club Night last Tuesday. Disappointing but the U19s will now take place on Tuesday October 12th. Next Tuesday (28th) we stage the Club U13s Championship as part of Club Night. The list of 14 eligible to compete is –

Katie Adams                Oliver F-Wilcox

Olivia Nicholas Tyler Matthews

Jasmin Matthews          Bradley Lewin

Charlie Bion                 Ayrin Larter

Theo Hinton                 Ben Philpott

Thomas Philpott            Evan Syer

Ayrin Larter                  Adam Allen

If any of the above want to race they will need to be booked in at 6.30 – it will start at 6.45 so if you think you may be a few minutes late let someone know before 6.30 that you are coming.

There will be three trophies and a “champagne moment” prize.  As there will be no Hawktalk next week (see below) this is prior notice of the U10s and Vets Club Championships to be held at Club Night on Tuesday 5th October.  As things stand the following 11 members are eligible for the U10s.

Jasmin Matthews          Bradley Lewin

Charlie Bion                 Ayrin Larter

Theo Hinton                 Ben Philpott

Thomas Philpott            Evan Syer

(Ian Jolly needs to do one more Club Night to qualify)

Normal Club Night racing will be provided for all other members on these Tuesdays.

SPEEDY RECOVERY

Best wishes to Dan Chambers after his wrist operation and Charlie Bion who has injured his knee at football. Dan will be out for the rest of 2010 but we hope to see Charlie back soon.

OVER THE SEVERN

A few Hawks will be crossing the Severn Bridge on Saturday into Wales searching for gold as they contest the final national round of the British Youth & Junior League and its Grand Prix competition.  We are hopeful of bringing back three trophies from the biggest competition in the world – watch this space.

GRAND PRIX FINALE

A reminder that the last Norfolk Grand Prix is being held this Wednesday (22nd) at Hethersett starting at 7.00 – be there if you want to book in by 6.45.

IPSWICH HERE SUN 3RD

Our final home League matches bring Ipswich to the Memorial Field on Sunday October 3rd for A & B matches starting at 2.00 and 3.30 respectively.

NO HAWKTALK

Following the trip to Newport on Saturday Janet and I are going to visit David in Devon for a couple of days and be back Tuesday afternoon so no time to do a Hawktalk next week – sorry!

ARE THEY THAT OLD??

Stumbled on some archive info the other day – thought the top three in the 1983 Club Best Pairs might amuse you –
